Location: Situated on the W bank of New London Harbour about 7.4km up the harbour from Entrance Buoys 1 and 2. New London is on the W bank and faces Groton on the E bank. General overview: There are no bridges across the main ship channel in New London Harbour for vessels bound for State Pier from the sea. Submarines of substantial draught may be operating in the approaches to New London Harbour, operating from Groton. Numerous sport fishing boats frequent the vicinity of the entrance buoys and New London dumping ground mid May-mid June. Cargo handled: Paper products, forest products, steel products, heavy lift/project cargo, non-ferrous metals. Traffic figures: State Pier: Approx 75-90,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: Largest vessel handled: "Mannar", bulk carrier of 38,005DWT, 10.0m draught.
