Location: Kandalaksha is situated on the E side of the head of Kandalakshskaya Guba, (Kandalasksha Bay), close N of the mouth of the Reka Niva, in the White Sea. General overview: The port is the only port open to visits by foreign vessels in Kandalakshskiv Zaliv, (Kandalaksha Bay). The port is open to navigation throughout the year with icebreaker assistance. The icebreakers are usually in use from the middle of January to the end of April. The port handles exports/imports of coastal bulk and general cargoes such as coal, chemical fertilisers in bulk and packed, pipes, iron ore concentrate, salt in bulk and packed, broken stone, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, scrap, vehicles and tractors, industrial goods and foodstuffs in boxes, bags, packets and containers, timber cargoes. Traffic figures: Approx 2,500,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone 1 (Winter: Oct 16 - April 15) (Summer April 16 - Oct 15).
