Location: Fraser River Port is situated on the main arm of the Fraser River where it flows into the Pacific Ocean, a few miles S of Vancouver BC. General overview: The port comprises the first 100km of the main arm of the Fraser River, providing some 270km of shoreline. Nine municipalities, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Richmond and Surrey border the port. There are three major deep sea facilities and many riverside businesses are now serviced by barge traffic rather than seagoing vessels. The port area handles containers, break-bulk, Ro-Ro, vehicles and general cargo. Historically, the area's economy has been based on forestry products, wood pulp and saw mills. At the beginning of 2008 the port area, including North Fraser, was amalgamated with Vancouver Port Authority and is administered under the name of Port Metro Vancouver Port Authority.
