General Description
Location: Gunsan (Kunsan) is situated on S bank near the mouth of the Kum Kang River, central W coast of S Korea.
General overview: The main port consists of sheltered multipurpose facilities built mainly on reclaimed land while Jang Hang comprises conventional berths on the north side of the river. The port consists of private passenger, general, vehicle, tanker and bulk berths including two new container berths and a fishing port. Gunsan handles dry bulk, containers, petroleum products, Ro-Ro, LPG, forest products, Ro-Ro, fish and breakbulk cargo. Rice is the main export. The port area includes Janghang on the N bank of the river opposite Gunsan City and the New Port of Kun-Jang, extending seawards on reclaimed land from Gunsan Port area. Shipyard facilities are also available. The Kunsan Free Trade Zone (GFTZ) operates within the port. Port development and expansion is ongoing.
There are nine main berths in the port area, with a coastline of 2460m and a maximum water depth of 12m.The handling equipment includes various shore cranes, floating cranes, barges and tugs. The maximum lifting capacity of floating crane is 30 tons, and the maximum power of tug is 220 kW.
Traffic figures: Approx 1,938 vessels, 1,400,000t of cargo and 37,000TEU are handled annually.
