Location: Makhachkala is located on the SW coast of the Caspian Sea in the Dagestan Republic.
General overview: Makhachkala commercial port consists of two harbours, dry cargo with fishing port and oil port. Both areas are protected by breakwaters. It is the only ice-free Russian port on the Caspian Sea. Transit cargoes are handled from W Europe, Central Asia, India and the Gulf areas, facilities for oil tankers up to 10,000t and cargo vessels up to 5,000t.
Traffic figures: Sea trade port handles 7,000,000t of oil products, 1,500,000t of mineral construction cargo, 400,000t of general and timber cargo as well as up to 50,000t of ore concentrate annually.
