General Description
Location: Manfredonia is situated on the E coast of Italy, in the Gulf of Manfredonia N of Bari.
General overview: This port consists of the Old Harbour, a quay within a breakwater and the New Harbour, 2km E, which is a jetty with a pier, protected by its own breakwater. The harbour is well equipped for handling most types of vessels including tankers, general cargo, bulk carriers and ferries. Principal exports include fertilisers, bauxite, vegetable oil, wine and general cargo. Imports include grain, bulk chemicals, petroleum products and general goods.
In the Porto Vecchio (Old harbour), berthing alongside the outer part of the western breakwater, the Molo di Ponente, is permitted with the prior approval of the port authorities. Maximum length 20 metres. Depths 6.0 - 7.0 metres. There are no facilities there.
Alternatively, a yacht may find a berth on the pontoon of the Italian Lega Navale at the NE end of the harbour. There is space on the pontoon for up to 90 vessels, maximum length 18.0 metres. Depths at the end of the pontoon are 2.5 - 3.5 metres. Most of the other pontoons along this end of the harbour have shallower depths.
The main commercial harbour is protected by two long breakwaters extending SE from the shore. To the NE of the harbour is a two-mile long jetty which is conspicuous in the approach from any direction (but also a potential hazard if approaching from N). The marina is directly S of the commercial harbour, protected by a long, curved breakwater extending S from the W arm of the commercial harbour breakwater and a second, shorter breakwater extending SE from the shore. The marina is entered from SW. Depths in the entrance are 6.0 metres.
Traffic figures: Approx 100 vessels use the port annually.
Load line zone: Summer.
Max size: Vessels up to LOA 300m and draught of 9.5m may use Porto Industriale; vessels not exceeding draught of 6.0m may enter Porto Vecchio.
