General Description
Location: Azov lies on the S bank of the River Don, approx 8nm from its mouth and approx 30nm NE of Kerch.
General overview: Azov port is located on the intermodal corridor for movement of cargoes in Russia from N-S and is an effective port for freight traffic between the Balkans-Danube and Mediterranean. This enables the delivery of cargoes to the central part of Russia, the Urals and Central Asia.
The port occupies an area of approx 240,000m², and operates all year-round. Navigation in winter is maintained with icebreaker assistance.
The main cargoes handled by the port include metals, timber, grain, chemical fertilisers, minerals, building materials and foodstuffs. In addition, there are also passenger services.
Traffic figure: Approx 5-6,000,000t of cargo handled annually, mainly steel and grain.
Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30. Max size: Draught 4.0m, 5,000DWT.
