General Description
Location: Samsun lies between Kalyon Burnu (41°19'N 036°20'E) and Civa Burnu (15nm ENE), on N coast with Black Sea. General overview: Samsun is a major gateway port for the central part of the Black Sea coast.
The port serves export, import cargoes and transit traffic to Iran. It is well located both for trade with countries having a coast on the Black Sea and for potential cargoes which will arise due to Black Sea Economic Co-operation Region (BSECR) project.
It is also well located for the cargoes destined to the Middle East from continental Europe through Rhine-Main-Danube canal and Black Sea. The port is protected by 2 breakwaters of length 3,132m and 1,580m.
The Azot Sanayi Terminal (TUGSAS), which handles liquid ammonia and phosphate cargoes, is situated 6nm SE of the port of Samsun.
Traffic figures: Samsun Port: Approx 2,318,710t of dry bulk, 37,340t of bulk liquid and 197,190t general cargo, 31,200 vehicles, 720 passengers and 1050 vessels handled annually.
Petrol Ofisi: Terminal handles approx 310,000t of bulk liquid and 75 tankers annually.
Aygaz: Approx 108,000t of bulk liquid and 45 tankers handled annually.
Total Oil: Approx 162,000t of bulk liquid cargo and 40 tankers handled annually.
