General Description
Location: Kaliningrad is situated on the S shores of the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of the Pregel River, connected to the open sea by the 22nm long Morskoy Canal. General overview: The port consists of 3 basins: Volnaya Harbour, Industrialnaya Harbour and Lesnaya Harbour. The port is kept open all year round by icebreakers. Imports: Fish products, foodstuffs and containerised cargo. Exports: Timber, pulp, rolled metal, scrap metal, grain, coal, coke, oil and fertiliser. Traffic figures: Approximately 3,300 vessels and 15,380,000t of cargo are handled annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter is from Nov 1 to Mar 31 and summer is from Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: Cargo vessels & Tankers: LOA 170 - 200m, beam 25.0-28.4m and draught 8.0-9.4m. Maximum permissible airdraught is 54m. Vessels with a length of 135m to 170m are berthed during daytime only.
