General Description
Location: Brindisi is located on the southern Adriatic coast.
General overview: A large well sheltered, commercial harbour with modern facilities for handling most types of vessels carrying bulk, liquid, gas and container cargoes. It is a major naval harbour and ferry terminal. The Port of Brindisi contains three major basins: the External Port, the Middle Port, and the Inner Port. The Port of Brindisi contains 21 docks with a total length of 3.7 thousand meters. The following areas charcteristics are:
● The External Port: Limited to South from the mainland, to Levant from the Pedagne islands, to W from the S Andrea island, Costa Morena dock and to N, from the Punta Riso seawall. Area: 3,000,000m².
● The Middle Port: Is formed from the length of seashore that precedes the access channel into the inland port (Pigonati Channel); the Bocche di Puglia inlet forms the northern basin. Area: 1,200,000m².
● The Inland Port: Is formed from two long arms that encircle the city to N and E and that they take respective the names of "Seno di Levante" and "Seno di Ponente". Area: 727,000m².
● The outer harbour protects the entrance to the inner harbour, within which a small middle harbour is linked by the Pigonati Channel.
The major imports entering this port include crude oil, liquid chemicals, gas, coal, grain and piece goods. The main exports leaving this port are oil products, grain, wine and fish.
Traffic figures: Approx 1,500 vessels, 10,117,000t of cargo, 1,100TEU and 521,000 passengers handled annually.
