General Description
Location: Shantou is located in the Province of Guangdong, 209km from Xiamen to the E and 313km from Hong Kong in the SW. The port is at the mouth of the Han Jiang, Rongjiang and Lianjiang rivers at the S'ly end of the Straits of Taiwan and is considered one of 18 pivotal ports in China. The port of Xidi comprises of the former Xidi harbour area, Handi harbour area and Xigang harbour area. They are located in the SW, NE and W of central Shantou city respectively at the river estuary. General overview: There are 6 port districts: Chuchi, Guangao, Mashan, Hongshi, Xidi and the old port district. Zhuchi port district has container handling facilites. There is daily cargo and passenger transportation from Shantou to Hong Kong. Cargoes handled include steel, petroleum, LNG, LPG, fertilisers, cement, coal, containers and general cargo. Caltex LPG wharf is in Guang Ao district (23°12.353'N 116°47.093'E). The port of Xidi is a local port located in the central city for the transhipment, transport and discharge of import and export cargo (mainly between Hongkong and Macau) as well as the transport of passengers. The main cargoes handled in the port are coal, chemical fertiliser, cement and manufactured goods for daily use. The 3 harbour areas are as follows: Xidi harbour area: This area has a water area of 4,000,000m², a land area of 22,000m² and a shoreline of 1,500m. Handi harbour area: This area has a water area of 550,000m², a land area of 29,000m² and a shoreline of 8,500m. Xigang harbour area: This area has a water area of 209,000m², a land area of 6,000m² and a shoreline of 3,500m. Traffic figures: Approx 22,210,000t of cargo and 341,000TEU handled annually. Load line zone: Summer. Max size: Cargo vessels: LOA 200m, draught 10.0m, airdraught 46m, 45,000DWT. Caltex: LOA 260m, draught 10.5m, no beam or airdraught restrictions.
