General Description
Location: Kholmsk is situated on the SW coast of Sakhalin Island, at the head of Nevelskoy Bay.
General overview: The port consists of a commercial harbour which handles general cargo, coal, timber, metals, pipes, containers, equipment as well as passenger traffic and fish products.
The commercial and fishing harbours are protected by two moles, the northern, 240m in length and the southern, 312m in length. The fish harbour, also known as Arakai or Port Ukhodnyye lies 0.6nm NNE of the entrance to the commercial harbour basin. The port is open for navigation throughout the year.
The period from Apr to Oct has the most favourable meterological conditions.
Traffic figures: Approx 2,200,000t of cargo handled annually.
Load line zone: Summer zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30.
Max size: LOA 130m, beam 20m, draught 6.7m, 5,500DWT.
