General Description
Location: Masan is situated on the southern tip of South Korea, in Masan Bay, approx. 43 km. west of Busan.
General overview: Masan is a natural harbor with an area of 13,775m². The port's geographic location and continued development make it a major hub for the Pacific region, especially container routes operating between China, Japan, and SE Asia. The Masan Free Trade Zone, Changwon Industrial Complex, and Sachum Industrial Complex are all located near the port.
he Port of Masan covers 1400 hectares of land and water and stretches along 28 kilometers of coastline. The harbor depth is 12 meters, and tidal variation is about 1.9 meters.
The Port of Masan operates an exclusive container terminal with 11 international routes between the port and ports in China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. The terminal will soon add routes with ports in Russia as well.
Due to its low port tariff and short clearance times, the Port of Masan is experiencing rapid growth in the export of automobiles. The port has expanded its facilities to support automobile exports. The car terminal in the Port of Masan has an 80 thousand square meters open-air yard for temporary storage of cars.
The general cargo terminals in the Port of Masan support industrial complexes in the hinterland, the Masan Free Trade Zone, and the Changwong National Industries Complex. Handling cargoes like logs, ironware, farm products, and miscellaneous goods, the Port of Masan can accommodate 11 two-million DWT and five medium to small vessels at the same time.
Pier 1 in the Port of Masan can accommodate two 8 thousand DWT vessels carrying scrap, iron, timber, and ores. The pier has annual cargo-handling capacity of 686 thousand tons. Handling aggregates, the Central Pier wharf berths small vessels and can move 80 thousand tons of cargo per year. Pier 2, handling coastal cargo, has four berths for three-thousand DWT vessels and can handle 945 thousand tons of cargo per year.
The Port of Masan's Pier 3 specializes in steel and frozen fish cargoes. It has two berths for 20 thousand DWT vessels and has annual cargo-handling capacity for 927 thousand tons.
Pier 4, handling machinery, has five berths for 20 thousand DWT vessels. It has annual cargo-handling capacity of 4.7 million tons. The Port of Masan's Doosan Pier also handles machinery. It has one berth for a 20 thousand DWT vessel, and it has annual cargo-handling capacity for over 1.5 million tons.
Pier 5 in the Port of Masan has annual cargo-handling capacity of almost 1.8 million tons of scrap iron and timber. Pier 5 has three berths for 20 thousand DWT vessels. The Suhang Pier handles timber and containers, and it has four berths for 20 thousand DWT vessels.
The Port of Masan also has nine facilities with total annual cargo-handling capacity for 5.7 million tons of exclusive cargoes. Handling oil, the SK Pier can accommodate one three thousand ton vessel, and the LG Pier can accommodate one six thousand DWT vessel.
Handling cement cargoes of a cumulative 2.3 million tons per year, the Ssangyong Pier can handle one five-thousand DWT vessel, the Dongyang Pier can accommodate one eight-thousand DWT vessel, and the Hanla Pier can accommodate one 20 thousand DWT vessel. Each of these piers has annual cargo-handling capacity for 756 thousand tons of cement.
Two piers in the Port of Masan handle cargoes of iron. The Pochul Pier, with annual cargo-handling capacity of 2.0 million tons, can accommodate one 20 thousand DWT vessel. With annual cargo-handling capacity for 756 thousand tons, the Port of Masan's Doosan Pier can also accommodate one 20 thousand DWT vessel.
The Hanil Pier in the Port of Masan handles fiber materials, and it can accommodate one three thousand DWT vessel. The HSD Engine Pier, handling up to 680.4 thousand tons of machinery per year, can accommodate one three thousand DWT vessel.
Principal imports are ore, oil, timber, scrap metal, and other bulk cargoes; exports include machinery, vehicles and steel products. Containers and general cargo also handled.
Traffic figures: Approx 12,500,000t of cargo handled annually and 150,000 cars transported through the container terminal.
