Location: The Port of Richards Bay is situated in the deep-water port of Richards Bay, on the east coast of South Africa. General overview: The Port of Richards Bay is South Africa's largest coal export port. The integration of infrastructure and facilities has enhanced the terminal’s ability to manage a variety of cargo types. There are 21 berths, divided into clean cargo berths and the coal terminal, which can accommodate 4 Capesize vessels and load 4 vessels at any one time. The entrance channel is dredged to a permissible draught of 17.5 metres. Berthing varies between 8m and 19m. Other private operators in the port include several wood chip export terminals and a bulk liquid terminal. South Africa is the third largest coal exporter in the world, and most of the coal is exported through this port.
