Location: Gangavaram is situated in southern India, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, approx. 8NM S of Vishakapatnam. General overview: The Port of Gangavaram consists of 9 berths, handling General and Multipurpose cargo, Coal and Iron Ore, with an initial capacity to handle 35,000,000t of cargo annually and accommodate vessels of 200,000DWT, with depths up to 21m. Two breakwaters with a total length of approx. 2.6km have been constructed to protect the port from the weather. The port mainly handles bulk cargoes such as coal, iron ore, limestone, bauxite, fertilizers, steel, raw sugar and project cargo. Traffic figures: Approx. 8,000,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: Bay of Bengal Seasonal Tropical Area Tropical Dec 1 to Apr 30 Summer May 1 to Nov 30. The port operates throughout the year.
