Location: The Port of Port Elizabeth is situated in Algoa Bay on the eastern Cape province. General overview: The Port of Port Elizabeth is the 5th largest in Southern Africa, based on tonnage handled. It is accessed via a 1.6nm entrance channel and protected by a 1,200m breakwater, covering a water area of 115ha. The port mainly imports machinery, chemicals, and general cargo, while the main exports consist of agricultural products, timber, textiles, ore, skins and hides in containers, and palletised citrus fruits. The entrance channel is maintained at a depth of -14.5m Chart Datum and has a width of 310m. The port has limitations on vessel draught, ranging from 9.6m for tankers to 12.1m for ore carriers, with deeper vessels requiring the harbour master's permission.
