General Description
Location: The Port of Saldanha Bay is located on the west coast of South Africa, and it is the largest natural anchorage and port in South Africa with a depth in the main entrance channel of over 23.0m
General overview: The Port of Saldanha Bay mainly serves as an export harbour and handles very little imports, except for crude oil.
The port primarily exports iron ore, lead, coiled and galvanised steel, copper and zinc ore concentrates, granite, pellets, anthracite, pig iron, salt and frozen fish.
The port has six berths, including three multipurpose berths, two iron ore berths and one crude oil berth, which can accommodate vessels up to 318.5m in length and up to 300,000DWT. With further dredging, vessels up to 350,000DWT could be accommodated.
Additionally, there is a multipurpose terminal quay with a total length of 874m, which has facilities for break bulk cargo handling.
