General Description
Location: Korsakov is situated on the N coast of Aniva Bay (La Perouse Strait) on the Island of Sakhalin in far eastern Russia.
General overview: It is navigable all year round and is open throughout 24 hours, foreign vessels must pass through specific entry positions as shown in Navigation section and be ice classed during the winter period.
The port is not well protected from winds and seas. In winter, the intensity of wave action is reduced due to floating ice in the port. Max wave height is 1.5-2.0m. The Bay of Aniva almost never freezes.
The main cargoes handled are coal, timber products, minerals, grain, containers, steel, chemicals in bulk, cellulose, paper and foods. A large volume of timber is transshipped for export at the port.
Traffic figures: The annual cargo throughput is approx 2,500,000t. Timber and general cargo account for 16% of annual volumes, with break bulk 40%, grain 3% and liquid 25%.
Export cargo comprises of 12.5% and imports 2.5%.
