General Description
Location: Pescara lies on the Adriatic coast of Italy around 12 miles NW of the port of Ortona and 22 miles SE of Giulianova, at the mouth of the river of the same name.
General overview: It is a small port for general and bulk cargoes and has a fish harbour. Pescara boasts one of the largest marinas along the central Adriatic coast, the Marina di Pescara with over 1000 berths at the area of 200,000 sq.m., as well as further moorings for smaller yachts (mostly occupied by local vessels) at the Porto Canale in the canalised River Pescara.
The entrance is protected by a curved detached breakwater, 750m in length, lying almost E-W approx 0.2nm N of the mole heads at the entrance. The inner side of moles are quayed and the main cargo area lies on the S side, close within the river mouth. The N side is reserved for the fishing fleet and further upstream both river banks are quayed and used by fishing boats, yachts and small military craft. The port also offers ferry routes to and from Pescara, whcih are served by 1 company: Snav, going o 3 destinations in Croatia. A road bridge spans the river approx 0.7nm WSW of the mole heads.
The main imports are wood, coal, bauxite, nitrates, fertilisers, cement, iron and cereals. Exports include olive oil, soap, pasta, asphalt, aluminium and grain.
Traffic figures: Approx 170 vessels, 330,000t of cargo and 60,000 passengers visit the port annually.
