General Description
Location: The Port of Tanga is situated on the northern coast of Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. It has been serving the commercial and agricultural needs of northern Tanzania for a considerable period, making it the longest-serving port in East Africa.
General overview: The Port of Tanga is primarily a lighterage port, equipped with two shallow water berths, a multipurpose jetty (currently not in use), and 12 anchorage berths for ocean-going vessels.
The port features a modern quay wall spanning 450 meters, encompassing berth one and two. Liquid bulk handling is facilitated by two offshore pipelines, each with a diameter of 12 inches.
Additionally, Totten Island hosts a Conventional Buoy Mooring (CBM) designed for the handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) through flexible hoses connected to submarine pipelines.
The port's key imports include phosphates, chemicals, machinery, vehicles, liquid ammonia, sulphur, grain, oil, and general cargo. Notable exports consist of coffee, sisal, fertilizer, cement, tea, timber, beans, skins, and hides.
