General Description

Location: Pohang lies at the mouth of the Hyeongsan River on the SE coast of the Korean peninsula, 55 km. north of Ulsan. Pohang Yeongil lies approx. 12 km. NNE of the steelworks at the entrance to the bay. General overview: Pohang consists of two harbours, Pohang Old Harbour (Guhang) and Pohang New Harbour (Shinhang). The old harbour consists of an outer basin, protected by breakwaters, and an inner narrow dock. This harbour contains a ferry terminal and provides berths for small passenger vessels, coastal cargo vessels and fishing boats. Main exports are fish, fish products and steel, imports include iron ore, coal and petroleum. The new harbour, for commercial vessels, is built on reclaimed land E of the entrance to Hyongsan Gang and consists of a large and almost fully enclosed basin. It is protected on its N and W sides by reclaimed land faced with a breakwater, and on its E side by a breakwater extending N for 0.7nm from the entrance to a stream. There are three berths in the Port of Pohang with a total length of 620 meters. Berths No. 71 and 86 are each 190 meters long and can accommodate vessels to 30 thousand DWT. Berth 71 has alongside depth of seven meters, while Berth 86 has alongside depth of eight meters. Berth No. 73 is 240 meters long with alongside depth of nine meters, and it can accommodate vessels to 10 thousand DWT. Samil are the only stevedores who handle discharges. The private new port of Pohang Youngil is operational and lies 6nm NE of Pohang, consisting of container and general cargo berths, see under separate entry. No.1 wharf is located on the heel wall of the north breakwater extending eastward. The wharf is 950 meters long and has three berths. Ships with draft of 14.5-16.5 meters are allowed to dock for iron ore and coal import. There is a loading and unloading machine with unloading capacity of 1500 tons per hour on the wharf; The second wharf is located in the southwest of Berth 1. There are also three berths for coal mines, with a total length of 950 meters, but the water depth is only 10.8-11.2 meters. There are three unloaders with the unloading capacity of 700-1000 tons per hour on the wharf, behind which is the location of Puxiang iron plant. No. 3 wharf is located on the southeast Bank of No. 1 harbor basin. It has four berths, with a total length of 850 meters and a water depth of 7.0-9.5 meters at the front. It is used for steel output. Wharf 4 is located in the west of jetty 5, with two berths, 420 meters in total length and 9.0-10.4 meters in water depth. It is used for loading and unloading general cargo. Wharf No. 5 is a jetty with 5 berths on both sides, with a total length of 750 meters and a water depth of 10-11 meters. It is used for loading and unloading steel and cement. Wharf 6 is located on the southwest Bank of the second harbor basin. The line of the wharf is 400 meters long and the water depth is only 5 meters. It is used for groceries. Wharf 7 is located in the southeast and East Bank of the second harbor basin, with two berths each, 400 and 550 meters long and 9-11 meters deep. There is also No. 8 wharf, which is located in the west, South, East and east of the third harbor basin, with a total of 5 berths. The length of both sides of the wharf line is 500 meters, and the length of the Nanshan bank is only 280 meters, with a water depth of 9.5-11.0 meters. In the East, there is the fourth harbor basin, which is equivalent to the perimeter of the third harbor basin in water depth. Hong Kong is a complete man-made port with 7850 meters of wharf line and more than 30 berths. Its annual throughput is more than 30 million tons. It imports iron ore, coal and limestone, and exports steel and cement. It is mainly Puxiang iron and steel complex, with an annual production capacity of more than 15 million tons. Traffic figures: Approx 52,000,000t of cargo, 1,500 vessels and 204,000 passengers are handled annually. Load line zone: Summer. Max size: LOA 330m, draught 18.0m, 250,000DWT.
