Location: Travemunde is situated at the mouth of Die Trave, a narrow and tortuous river, which flows into the S part of Lubecker Bucht. General overview: Travemunde harbour serves as the outer port of Lubeck, approx 8nm further SW, especially for passenger traffic and Ro-Ro traffic facilities. The entrance channel to Travemunde and the channel to Lubeck are kept open by ice breakers so long as Lubecker Bucht is not closed by ice. With a total area of 749,000 m² and a quay length of 2,065 m, "Skandinavienkai" in Travemünde is one of the largest ferry ports in Europe. There are connections to Sweden ( Trelleborg and Malmö ), Finland and the Baltic States . The terminal specializes in roll-on roll-off traffic. Trucks and semi-trailers (trailers), export and import cars, containers and railway wagons are mainly handled, but also heavy goods, steel and dangerous goods. "Ostpreussenkai" Terminal's berth can handle ships with max LOA length 200 m (656 ft) and max-width 25 m (82 ft). There are plans for building a dedicated cruise terminal with 1 berth (length 300 m / 984 ft) to allow docking of bigger cruise liners. Traffic figures: 18,100,000 tonnes, including 640,000 trucks and trailers, 55,000 cars and 41,000 containers (each in units) are handled annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max. size: LOA: 200 m; beam: 25 m; draft: 8.0 m. The largest vessel called at the port: LOA: 242 m, draught: 8.1 m, deadweight: 27,000 t.
