The shipping platform

Location: Volos is located at the head of the Gulf of Pagasitikos on the eastern Greek mainland. General overview: The port is on the Greek side of Europe/Middle East Seabridge, and also links the mainland with Sporades and Evoia. In the summer months, ferries operate to Mytilene, the eastern Aegean and the Cyclades. The harbour is safe and sheltered, a breakwater running from the E part of the harbour to its centre protects vessels at all piers. The port contains about three thousand meters of quays that can accommodate vessels to 35 thousand DWT that are 200 meters long with draft of 9.8 meters. Also handling general and bulk cargoes, the central pier is 240 meters long with alongside depth of 8.23 meters, and the new pier to the west offers 980 meters of berthing space with alongside depth of 9.75 meters. Tanker berths are available at a pier operated jointly by Shell, Mobil, and BP offering 30 meters of berthing space with alongside depth of 8.23 meters. The Port of Volos has roll-on/roll-off facilities available and ample cargo-handling equipment. Approx 3,000m of quays are linked by ferry, container transport lines and passenger cruise facilities. The main cargoes handled are metals, agricultural products and fertilisers. Private facilities handle bulk cement and petroleum products. Traffic figures: Approx 1,290 vessels are handled annually.
