General Description

Location: Livorno, also known as Leghorn, is in NW Italy on the Ligurian Sea. General overview: The Port of Livorno handles all types of vessels and cargoes including lift-on/lift-off, roll-on/roll-off, liquid and dry bulk, and passengers. The port is divided into four main parts. Avamporto, Bacino San Stefano, Canale Industriale with its adjoining basins and Porto Vecchio. The approaches are protected by a curved sea wall, with the entrance to the S used by commercial shipping. The port, with 11,000m of quays and 90 berths, handles bulk raw materials to service the heavy industries of the city, which includes ship building and repair. There is a large oil refinery close N of the city. Livorno also handles general cargo, bulk foodstuffs, forestry products, new cars and containers. The port provides ferry services and is a cruise liner destination. There are lay-by berths at the Outer Port, by the breakwaters at San Stefano Basin, for vessels awaiting a berth or working dangerous cargoes. With capacity for two million TEUs of containerized cargo, the Port of Livorno’s container terminal covers 658 thousand square meters and includes a 1.6 thousand meter long quay. The port’s roll-on/roll-off terminal covers 477.1 thousand square meters and a quay of 1.7 thousand meters with storage capacity for six thousand cars and capacity to handle 1.2 million units each year. The Port of Livorno’s Multi-use Terminal has a 96-meter quay and terminal storage area of 25 thousand square meters. The breakbulk terminal specializes in timber, non-ferrous metals, paper, sand, cellulose, clay, metal products, bentonite, and coal. Covering an area of 181.6 thousand square meters, the terminal has a storage area of 71.2 thousand square meters and capacity to store 160 thousand cubic meters of cargo. The copper and non-ferrous metals terminal has a 500-meter-long quay and can store 95.8 thousand square meters. The Port of Livorno’s frozen food terminal covers 18 thousand square meters and includes storage capacity of 35 thousand square meters with capacity to handle about 200 thousand tons of cargo per year. The cereal terminals cover 63 thousand square meters and have a 336-meter-long quay and storage capacity for 115.6 thousand tons. Port of Livorno includes a terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) that has capacity for four billion cubic meters of LNG. Traffic figures: Approx 33,000,000t of cargo, 745,500TEU and 2,282,500 passengers handled annually. Load line zone: Summer. Max size: -Container vessels Berth Nos 44-46: Draught 12.0m. (Berth No 14: Certain classes of container vessels limited to draught of 11.2-11.8m). -Tankers Berth No 10: LOA 350m, draught 12.0m (more than LOA 260m, draught 11.7m).
