General Description

Location: Cagliari is situated on the S coast of Sardinia, facing the Golfo di Cagliari. General overview: Cagliari is the main cruise port on the island of Sardinia and a very busy one due to its ferry connection to the mainland (Civitavecchia, Naples) and Sicily (Palermo). The port also features one of the largest container terminals in the Mediterranean and highly developed port facilities and infrastructure. The historic port has 5,800 meters of quay, which serves commercial and Ro-Ro traffic as well as passenger ships. The canal port has 1,600 meters of quay and has five berths for transshipping and Ro-Ro traffic with 11 meters of depth. These two ports are flanked by berths for the petrochemical and oil industry, which accommodate mooring for 17 ships at a time. The main tanker terminal is at Sarroch (see separate entry), approx 11nm SW of Cagliari. The principal exports are zinc, lead, feldspar, wine and dairy products; the principal imports are grain, timber, coal and general commodities. Pontile Enichem Sud, 4nm to the S, is also part of the main port. The Marina of Cagliari is located on the Dogana pier inside the city port which, due to its geographical position in the center of the Mediterranean, is one of the largest and best equipped Italian ports, an important tourist port and commercial hub, equipped with a multifunction terminal. The Marina di Cagliari is suitable for berthinf oflarge boats and is also equipped with all the main services. Traffic figures: Approx 5,600 vessels, 35,262,000t of cargo, 550,000TEU and 330,200 passengers handled annually. Load line zone: Summer.
