General Description
Location: Moerdijk Harbour is located at the end of Hollandsch Diep, on the Rhine-Scheldt Canal.
General overview: Moerdijk, a multipurpose harbour, has an industrial area and port facility, which mainly handles oil and chemical products. There are 5 basins, Hollandsch Diep Harbour, Roode Vaart Harbour, Eastern Harbour, Central Harbour and Western Harbour. The basins are approx 0.5nm apart and run SSE from the S shore of Zuid Hollandsch Diep. There is a "T" shaped tanker berth to the W of the basins. Moerdijk Port has a number of excellent regular services which sail several times per week to and from Scandinavia and various destinations in the UK, Spain and Portugal.
The industrial complex incorporates a cluster of chemical, energy, transport and storage, logistics and distribution, wholesale, metals, minerals and Agri bulk companies. The main port area spans 2600 hectares including five kilometres of quays with a water depth of 10.5 metres. It also handles transhipment cargo including bulk, containers, glass, construction material, timber, sand and gravel.
A multimodal facility, it is linked with key European trade centres by roads, railways and inland waterways. The central wharves are connected via pipelines to the ports of Rotterdam, Zeeland, and Antwerp.
Traffic figures: Approx 14,000,000t of cargo, 500,000 TEUs and 13,500 vessels handled annually.
Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.
Max size: LOA 201 m, beam 32.5 m, draught 8.5 m for vessels which approach from seaward via Oude Maas. Max draught 8.9m permitted in Central Harbour under certain restrictions and conditions. Max airdraught for all vessels is 45m above NAP. Vessels exceeding LOA 175m must obtain prior permission from the Harbour Co-ordination Centre, Rotterdam.
