General Description
Location: Luanda is the capital and principal port of Angola, and is a natural harbour situated in a bay, protected to seaward by Luanda Island.
General overview: Port berth depths alongside vary from 3.7 metres for passenger ferries, 12.5m for container berths, 13.5m for bulk cargo berths and 19.3m for tankers (225,000-dwt)
Exports: Coffee, palm kernels and palm oil, sugar, cotton, diamonds, maize, wax, sisal, salt, manganese and petroleum products.
Imports: Motor vehicles, cotton goods, iron and steel, cement, machinery, flour, coal and oil. Ro-Ro vessels importing container cargoes and used vehicles on the same vessel must use Lobito port until such time as the facilities exist in Luanda for their combined discharge.
Transit with IMO class 1 on board: depends on the type of IMO Class 1 and requires prior authorization from the Angolan authorities before loading them at the Port of origin.
