General Description
Location: The Port of Tomakomai is located on the southern coast of Hokkaido, 65km south of Sapporo.
General overview: The Port of Tomakomai is an important distribution base for Hokkaido, handling the most cargo in northern Japan.
There are two harbours: the large western harbour, Tomakomai Ko, which has almost 1,800,000m² of anchorage area in depths ranging from 14m to 9m, and the new eastern harbour, Tomakomai Higashi Ko, which has 11,000ha of industrial area and is protected by three breakwaters.
The western harbour is divided into Honkoh, Makomai, and Yufutsu areas, while the eastern harbour is divided into Hamaatsuma and Benten areas, which are 8nm east of Tomakomai Ko.
The western harbour is protected by two breakwaters, while the eastern breakwater of the new eastern harbour protects a berth for large tankers.
The Port of Tomakomai handles a variety of cargoes, including coal, crude oil, petroleum products, cement, salt, chemicals, iron and steel, gravel, sand, lumber, metal scraps, and machinery.
