Location: The Port of Vado Ligure is situated near Genoa, in the N part of Ligurian Sea.
General overview: Vado Ligure is a sub port of Savona-Vado. Vado basin has piers for the loading/unloading of coal and oil, while the Ro-Ro terminal provides ferry services connecting Vado with Corsica and Sardinia and has an annual capacity of 378,000 passengers. The reefer terminal handles and distributes fruit throughout Europe by road and rail. The Vado Port System is made up of two well integrated terminals, the Reefer Terminal and a new semi-automated terminal, the Vado Gateway.
● Reefer Terminal:
Reefer Terminal is the leading fruit terminal on the Mediterranean Sea. Located in a customs bonded area, volumes of fresh products handled by the terminal have increased from 82,000 pallets in 1982, when it became operational, to around 600,000 pallets in recent years. Bananas and pineapples account for the majority of these volumes, with the remainder made up of kiwi, citrus and other fruits from New Zealand, South Africa and Latin America. The terminal has 3 deep-sea Berths. The main quay is 470m long with 14.10m draft, the fruit quay is 240m in length with a 10.00m draft, and the RoRo berth is 200m long with 9m draft.
● Vado Gateway:
Vado Gateway is a deep-sea container terminal in the Port of Vado Ligure, operated by APM Terminals Vado Ligure Spa, an Italian company owned by APM Terminals (50.1%), Cosco Shipping Ports (40%) and Qingdao Port International (9.9%). The terminal capitalises upon the competitiveness of the Ligurian and Italian port network, providing a new connection between the markets in Northern Italy, Switzerland, Germany and North Eastern France and the rest of the world and representing one of the Med gateways of the “New Silk Road”. Landside, APM Terminals moves 30% of container volumes by rail, thanks to 10 rail links from Vado Ligure to intermodal centres in Northen Italy (including Milan and Padua). The operations take place along a quay length of 700 m, offering a total capacity of 900,000 TEUs/year.Thanks to a quay depth of 17.25 m and quay height of 4.5 m above sea level, Vado Gateway can accommodate the latest generation container vessels.
