Location: Aviles is located on the Ria de Aviles Estuary on the central N coast of Spain. General overview: A large commercial, fishing and leisure port, with the commercial berths located at the NW and SE corners of the main reach (Canal Pedro Menendez). The Port of Aviles contains a total of almost 272 thousand square meters of uncovered storage area and 27 thousand square meters of covered storage. It handles bulk, breakbulk, liquid bulk and has facilities for fishing and leisure craft. The San Juan de Nieva Basin contains the South Dock (379 meters long with alongside depth of 12 meters) and the West Dock (300 meters with alongside depth of 10 meters). These docks handle dry and liquid bulk cargoes. The Raices Dock is 821 meters long with alongside depth of 8 meters, and it handles dry and liquid bulk and general cargoes. An extension of Raices Dock, at 397 meters long with alongside depth of 12 meters, serves solid bulk and general cargoes. The Inespal Dock, handling specialized dry bulk cargoes, is 133 meters long with alongside depth of 7 meters. At 810 meters long with alongside depth of 5 meters, the Fishing Dock has two ice factories and capacity to store 160 thousand tons of fish per day. Imports: Zinc concentrates, aluminium ore, ammonia, coal and tar. Exports: Sulphuric acid, coke, zinc, bobbins, steel profiles, glass and fertilisers. Traffic figures: Approx 1,000 vessels, 5,605,600t of cargo and 8,600TEU handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: Largest vessels handled: "Freedom Lily", LOA 190m, draught 12.57m and "Kiran Asya", LOA 238m, draught 11.9m.
