General Description
Location: The Port of Yokohama, located approx. 30km from Tokyo, is situated on the northwestern side of Tokyo Bay.
General overview: The Port of Yokohama offers facilities for most vessels of up to 300,000DWT and is renowned for its cruise liner terminal, which is Japan's principal terminal.
Currently, the port is being developed into a major container hub port, with separate facilities dedicated to intercontinental and Asian container traffic.
The port consists of:
Main Terminal: Yokohama's largest facility with 24 berths, including 14 container berths, and can accommodate most vessels up to 300,000DWT.
Yamashita Wharf: It has 10 multi-purpose terminal berths and can dock ships up to 25,000 tons. The average length of wharf line is 220m, with water depths mostly at -10m.
Xingang Wharf (Shinko): Has 5 berths that can accommodate cargo ships up to 20,000 tons.
Yamanouchi Wharf: Built in 1932 and 1934, it has an area of 20.2 hectares, one shoreline of 130 meters long, and can dock ships up to 15,000 tons, mainly for ships in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Detamachi Wharf: Has 4 berths and can accommodate cargo ships up to 25,000 DWT, with each berth at 125m-135m in length and 7.5m in depth.
Kanazawa Timber Wharf: A special timber wharf of Yokohama port, it can dock ships up to 15,000 tons and is used for the import, export, and transshipment of building materials.
Mizuho Wharf: The specific situation of berths is unknown as it is still occupied by US forces.
Folk Wharf: A private wharf built by private enterprises and mainly used for importing crude oil and exporting private enterprise products.
Yokohama International Passenger Terminal: It has 6 berths, including 4 berths 225 meters long and 12 meters deep, that can dock four 30,000 ton passenger cruise ships at one time.
